In 1980, Racquel (Racqy) E. Canlas started a small fellowship composed of her officemates at Filinvest Credit Corporation. She was a Masters in Business Administration graduate from the University of the Philippines and worked as assistant to the president of Filinvest at that time.
In 1983, Racqy resigned from her job and formed the Friends of Jesus Christ Ministries International Inc. (FJCMII). She registered it as a non-profit, non-stock organization, established primarily to promote the gospel of Jesus Christ. Initially, the main reason for the existence of the group was to fulfill God’s mandate to distribute copies of the Bibles for free, which is referred to as Free Bible Ministry (FBM). Eventually, however, the group evolved into a non-denominational, full gospel church, known as Friends of Jesus Christ (FJC) Church, establishing its presence and doing God’s work in Metro Manila, the provinces, military camps and abroad.
The first worship service was held at the Makati Skyline Restaurant, Legaspi St., Makati, on June 18, 1983. Around 24 people attended. The group grew, and eventually, spiritual families were established in various places in the Philippines and abroad. Bible studies were also regularly conducted among AFP officers and soldiers, especially those in detention for rebellion and other charges.
On Novermber 29, 1998, the founder Senior Pastor Racqy Canlas went home to be with the Lord in Heaven. But the work of the Lord through the FJC church continues to move on and on… by His grace alone. Glory to the Living God!
